Success story

From Data chaos to a foundation for scale

How a fast-growing healthcare company transformed fragmented data into a structured, cloud-based foundation for analytics

Overview

A fast-growing healthcare company was scaling faster than its data infrastructure could support.

Patient and provider data was arriving from partners in different formats, with much of it unstructured and stored across Excel, CSV and SQL Server environments. Records were often bundled into single fields rather than separated into usable data elements.

The result was unreliable data, limited reporting capability and a growing backlog that was becoming increasingly difficult to manage. Precision Technologies Corp partnered with the client to design and build a cloud data warehouse, turning fragmented inputs into a structured foundation for analytics and decision-making.

The Challenge

Growth was outpacing the data infrastructure

As the client’s provider and partner network expanded, so did the volume and variety of incoming data.

The environment faced several challenges:

  • Data arrived in inconsistent and largely unstructured formats.
  • Records were often bundled into single fields rather than separated by data type.
  • Data was spread across SQL Server, Excel and CSV sources.
  • No cloud data environment was in place.
  • Unreliable data was limiting decision-making.
  • The visualization team was blocked from delivering usable reporting.
  • A growing backlog needed to be addressed without disrupting ongoing business operations.

The client needed more than a new data repository.

It needed a defined data strategy, a repeatable process and a structured foundation that could support analytics as business grew.

The Objective

Build a structured, governed data foundation without disrupting operations

The transformation focused on:

  • Defining a clear data management strategy
  • Establishing a cloud-based data warehouse
  • Replacing the existing Excel, CSV and SQL Server patchwork
  • Converting unstructured records into structured data
  • Creating clean data flows for data scientists and visualization teams
  • Maintaining visibility and communication with management throughout the project

The Solution

Establish the data strategy and delivery model

Precision worked with the client team to clarify scope, identify the nuances behind the data challenges and establish a clear strategy. The work was then broken into sprints, creating a structured delivery model while allowing the team to address issues as they emerged.

Build the data foundation

Precision built the data warehouse and used Hadoop and Sqoop to extract and cleanse records.

Data architecture and field mapping were established to ensure information could flow reliably to data scientists. The EDI team then separated transformed data into appropriate fields, processing tens of thousands of reports against a long-standing protocol.

Connect teams and enable analytics

With multiple teams working on the data simultaneously, Precision helped resolve recurring deadlocks and maintained visibility for management throughout the engagement.

Once structured data was flowing, Power BI was implemented for the visualization team. Data security standards were maintained throughout, given the sensitivity of healthcare information.

The Impact

Nearly 2,000 reports converted in three months

Precision converted and added nearly 2,000 reports to the warehouse within three months, against an original five-month estimate.

The client also achieved:

  • A centralized data foundation:
Data was brought together in one environment, replacing scattered Excel and CSV sources.
  • Earlier analytics enablement:
The .NET team could begin extraction and visualization work ahead of schedule.
  • Faster delivery:
The project was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget.
  • Validated execution:
Milestone-based validation helped confirm the data strategy throughout delivery.
  • Ongoing visualization:
Power BI was deployed to support continued analytics and reporting.
